A serious traffic accident occurred early Saturday morning between Kunszentmárton and Tiszaföldvár in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County, Hungary, near the 32-kilometre mark of Route 442. A double-decker bus veered off the road under unclear circumstances, crashed into a ditch, and tipped onto its side near a railway embankment.
There were 77 people on the bus, including children. According to initial reports, 19 passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious, the police confirmed. While there is no official update yet on their exact conditions, emergency responders treated the injured at the scene and transported several individuals to the hospital.
The accident took place around 5 AM near the outskirts of Kungyalu, as the bus was heading toward Kunszentmárton. According to reports from Blikk and Telex, and based on photos published by hiros.hu, the vehicle involved appears to be a Setra double-decker bus, which was likely operating on a scheduled route. However, no details have been released about the purpose of the trip.
Emergency units responded in large numbers to the scene. The technical rescue is being carried out by professional firefighters from Szentes and Kunszentmárton, under the direction of the disaster management operations service. Police, paramedics, and disaster response personnel have been working at the site for hours. Initially, the affected road section was completely closed, but by around 9 AM, traffic resumed on a single lane under police control.
The Kunszentmárton Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident as a mass-casualty traffic accident. Authorities are still determining the exact cause, whether it involved mechanical failure, driver error, or adverse road conditions.
Police are urging drivers to exercise increased caution in the area and to follow all traffic control signals.
