Renewal continues at Danubius Hotels in 2025 with major investment

Over the past five years, Danubius Hotels Zrt. has invested around HUF 35 billion in the renovation and modernization of its hotels. The chain’s British owner is committed to ongoing development, and in 2025 the company plans to invest a record-breaking HUF 13 billion — the highest amount to date — largely from its own resources. The developments focus on enhancing the guest experience through thoughtful design, eco-conscious upgrades, and sustainable operations. This year, the transformation of Danubius Hotel Helia in Budapest has been completed, while refurbishments continue across several other hotels in the chain.
Danubius Hotels Zrt. places great emphasis on the continuous renewal of its properties, having spent approximately HUF 35 billion on renovations and modernization over the past five years. The hotel chain is owned by UK-based CP Holdings Ltd., which operates hotel industry businesses in six European countries.
“We are committed to renewing our hotels, which is why we are planning to invest a record HUF 13 billion in 2025, primarily from internal funding. Our long-term goal is to ensure our hotels are energy-efficient and undergo environmentally conscious renovations. A significant portion of this investment will be dedicated to such developments,” said Balázs Kovács, CEO of Danubius Hotels Zrt.

The buildings within the Danubius Hotels portfolio vary in style and age, with construction dates ranging from the late 19th to the late 20th century, including several historic properties. Renovating them requires a different business approach compared to newly built, environmentally conscious greenfield hotel projects.
Beyond aesthetic enhancements, the hotel chain is also focused on energy-efficient upgrades that provide long-term returns, including the installation of solar panels and heat pumps. Sustainability is not only achieved through renovations but also by transforming daily operations and fostering environmental awareness among both staff and guests.
The use of eco-friendly materials is increasing, obsolete equipment is being recycled or donated to charity, and the use of plastics and excess packaging is being reduced across the chain.
Hotels undergoing transformation
Located on the Pest side of the Danube, Danubius Hotel Helia is a flagship project in this comprehensive renovation initiative. The refurbishment was centered around a modern wellbeing concept, resulting in interior spaces where physical and mental rejuvenation seamlessly blend with design. The hotel, which features its own wellness and fitness center and boasts extensive event hosting capabilities, completed its renovation in April 2025.
All 262 Premium rooms and suites have been upgraded with smart features. In recent years, the hotel’s conference facilities, lobby, and dining areas (Yellow Bistro & Bar, Episode Restaurant) have also been refurbished. In response to guest needs, new apartments and suites have been introduced. Today’s travellers seek spaces tailored to their lifestyle, in contrast to the standardized room types of the past.

Long-stay apartments are equipped with a kitchen, dining/meeting table, and a spacious bathroom, offering comfortable accommodation for extended visits.
Junior suites, with their generous room size, are ideal for families, featuring a pull-out sofa, work area, and a cozy bathroom.
Lifestyle apartments, a true rarity, offer a unique experience in Budapest. In addition to kitchen and workspaces, they include a sauna and personal gym equipment — perfect for guests who prioritize healthy living.
At Danubius Hotel Annabella in Balatonfüred, room renovations began in 2024, with two entire floors already completed. By the 2025 season, 265 Premium rooms and 6 Premium suites across four floors will be ready to welcome guests. The design pays homage to the mid-century modern style of the mid-20th century, evoking the spirit of the 1960s. The playful interior design is centered around harmony and the essence of summer by Lake Balaton.
Interior design elements emphasize the original concept of the hotel — perfect comfort and unforgettable memories for the entire family. The Annabella’s design draws inspiration from the waters of Lake Balaton and its seemingly endless horizon. The ambiance of the renewed rooms communicates a message of freedom and vacations in harmony with nature.
At Danubius Hotel Bük, the renovation continued in the spring of 2025 with the opening of a bright, nature-inspired lobby that complements the previously renovated rooms. The bar and reception have also been entirely revamped. As one of Danubius Hotels’ most popular family destinations, the Bük property has seen extensive wellness upgrades in recent years, including a completely redesigned sauna area. Renovations are ongoing in 2025, with the indoor pool area and another full floor of rooms being modernized.

Hungary’s largest hotel, Danubius Hotel Hungaria in Budapest, saw further upgrades in 2025. Following last year’s new lobby opening, two conference rooms have been modernized and guest room renovations have commenced.
Danubius Hotels & modern Design
The interior design of all four hotels was created by Spanish designer Nathalie Rottenburg, a hotel design specialist who previously collaborated with the chain on Hilton Budapest, Radisson Blu Béke Hotel, and the White Raven Skybar & Lounge.
“In the past, hotels were simply places to stay. Today, they are destinations where travel becomes an experience. Through spatial design, I aim to support this shift. At Danubius Hotels, lobbies are open, transparent areas where diverse activities can coexist in harmony,” added Nathalie Rottenburg.
