Malaysians in Hungary celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri with the theme “Raya Balik Kampung Style”

The Embassy of Malaysia in Budapest hosted a Hari Raya Aidilfitri or more famously known as Eid “Open House”, on 26th April 2025 at the Embassy’s garden compound. Around 200 Malaysians, foreign representatives and local invitees attended the event. The event witnessed Malaysians from all backgrounds and walks of life residing in Hungary coming together to celebrate in the spirit of unity, a reflection of Malaysia’s strong multiethnic harmony. Hari Raya is a celebration of unity and harmony for Malaysians and is truly a festival that reflects the beauty and diversity of Malaysia.

While Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a celebration observed with gratitude and joy by Malaysians of Muslim faith, at the same time, it is also customary that such joyous celebration is shared with other multi-ethnic and multi-religious people of Malaysia, much like the atmosphere during religious and cultural festivals of Chinese New Year, Christmas, Deepavali and the Harvest Festival of Sabah and Sarawak. Interestingly, the Malaysians also hailed from all parts of Malaysia, making Hungary’s Malaysian community even more diverse in background.

Themed “Raya Balik Kampung Style” (Homecoming Raya), this year’s Open House embraced the nostalgic charm of countryside festivities. Guests were treated to an array of traditional Malaysian dishes, including Ayam Masak Lemak Cili Padi (chicken in rich coconut curry with bird’s eye chilies), Rendang (a spicy, aromatic meat dish with coconut milk and spices), Ketupat (compressed rice cakes wrapped in woven coconut leaves), Chicken Satay with peanut sauce, Lemang (glutinous rice cooked in bamboo with coconut milk), and Teh Tarik, a Malaysia’s signature frothy “pulled” tea.

For many Malaysians in attendance, these flavors brought a comforting taste of home, especially for those who have been away for some time.
