BREAKING – Hungary quits International Criminal Court, here’s the parliament’s decision, UPDATED: FM Szijjártó

The Hungarian Parliament, in which PM Orbán’s Fidesz has a supermajority, decided to leave the International Criminal Court because it has recently become a political body.

Hungary no longer member of the International Criminal Court

134 Fidesz-KDNP MPs voted for the departure against 37 nays and 7 abstentions in today’s morning vote. The relevant bill was submitted by Zsolt Semjén, the deputy prime minister of Hungary and chairman of KDNP, Hungary’s Christian Democratic party.

The Hungarian government decided to leave the body in April after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Budapest.

ICC has become a political body, the Hungarian government said

The ICC “used to be a respectable initiative, but recently it seems to have become a political body,” Gergely Gulyás, the minister of the Prime Minister’s Office, said. He added then that “pressing charges against Israeli head of government Benjamin Netanyahu has been the saddest example.” “The Hungarian government considers all that unacceptable, and has decided not to continue participation in the ICC’s activities,” Gulyás concluded.

Gulyás said that Hungarian authorities did not arrest Netanyahu in April in Budapest because the Hungarian Parliament never “proclaimed the ICC statues, therefore the document has not become a part of Hungarian law.”

Later FM Szijjártó said that “the ICC das reduced the international judicial system to a politically motivated institution with this decision, and we Hungarians don’t wish to be part of a politically motivated judicial system.”

UPDATE: FM Szijjártó talks about nonsense ICC actions

Lawmakers in a vote on Tuesday approved Hungary’s withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), the foreign minister noted, adding that the government will soon inform the Secretary-General of the United Nations of the decision. Péter Szijjártó told that ICC’s operations had generated controversy in international politics in recent weeks, referring to the court’s “nonsense actions” such as “issuing a warrant against dead leaders of Hamas”.

The court, Szijjártó said, had tried “to counterbalance their politically unacceptable decision to include the Israeli prime minister on the list”. “Obviously the court has become not only unserious but also a politically motivated body, and it is for us unacceptable if a court is motivated by politics,” Szijjarto said, insisting that “Hungary has no place in that organisation”. Szijjártó said that as soon as the decision takes effect and the bill is signed by the president and promulgated, he would immediately send a note to the UN Secretary-General.

  1. Orban may be thinking ahead by leaving the ICC before any possible arrest warrant is issued for him.

  2. Hey, guys. Lincoln Casino was recommended – I went to check it out and got hooked. It’s really comfortable here: the design is not annoying, everything is in its place. You can see that the site is suitable for those who are from Australia and appreciate simplicity.

  3. Very different from Australian Casino environments of my “vast” knowledge.
