Italian paper: Cardinal Péter Erdő has a chance to become pope; he revealed Macron’s meddling in the election

Italian and Hungarian news outlets suggest that the papal conclave may again become a clash between the liberal and conservative wings of the Catholic church. Everybody takes sides; even Donald Trump would like to elect a pope who would not be that mistrustful towards him. Macron does not want Conservative Robert Sarah from Guinea to be elected. If a Conservative pope comes after the “liberal” Francis, Péter Erdő can be the winner.
According to Corriere della Sera, the Italian Matteo Zuppi can become the new pope, who would be a follower of Pope Francis. If the Conservative side is stronger, Cardinal Péter Erdő will be the pope, who will fulfil a balancing function, Vasárnap, the Roman Catholic Hungarian media outlet wrote.
La Repubblica wrote that French President Macron would like to see Jean-Marc Noël Aveline, the archbishop of Marseille, on the papal throne. Trump would like to have a pope who is not as mistrustful towards him as Pope Francis was. The leftist newspaper named Péter Erdő as such a candidate.

Italian Rainews wrote that Cardinal Erdő would take the name John Paul III if elected, since he was made cardinal by Saint John Paul II.
According to atv.hu, Erdő informed the conclave about President Macron’s meddling in the election process. Macron allegedly aimed to block the election of the Conservative Robert Sarah, a cardinal from Guinea. Le Monde wrote that Macron met with the French cardinals after the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome and asked them to oppose the election of Cardinal Sarah.

Based on InfoVaticana, Péter Erdő informed the members of the conclave and said it was unacceptable for a secular political leader to meddle in the work of the conclave. Tribune Chretienne wrote that the five French cardinals represent a progressive approach.
The conclave will start the election process on 7 May. 130 cardinals will decide on the new pope.
